午後9時50分頃、東海道線鶴見−新子安駅間で、下りの貨物列車がゆるいカーブで後部3両がせりあがって脱線し、その3両が横須賀線線路上に転覆したところに、80キロのスピードで進行してきた同線の東京駅行き上り電車が衝突する。衝突した電車はさらにすぐ隣を徐行していた下り電車に激突し、死者161人、重軽傷者120人をだす惨事となる。
